Dr. Maria Cartolano is a Lecturer at the Rosenstiel School in the Marine Biology and Ecology Department. She currently serves as track coordinator for the Marine Mammal Science track of the Master of Professional Science (MPS) program. Her research interests include marine vertebrate physiology, behavior, and toxicology as well as marine science education.

In addition to being passionate about teaching undergraduate and graduate students, she has taught high school biology and continues to teach high school marine science pre-college summer programs at the University of Miami. She has also been dedicated to outreach and civic engagement events both at the University of Miami and within the broader non-scientific community in Miami-Dade for over 15 years. She has organized and participated in events, programs, and demonstrations for people of all ages with a focus on improving inclusion in ocean science and access to marine science educational opportunities. 

She is the current director of WAVES, which is a program that includes immersive field trips, lesson plans, educational kits, teacher professional development, and research that are designed to excite K-12 students about ocean conservation and provide access to marine science curriculum.
