The Shark Research & Conservation Program (SRC) at the University of Miami focuses broadly on conducting applied research on the ecology, biology, and conservation of sharks and rays and their habitats. Areas of focus include not only apex predators, but juvenile and small-bodied sharks and rays, which often receive less research and conservation attention. Our current research includes research into the movement, behavior, reproduction, morphology, and habitat use of sharks and the food web relationships they rely on, especially in highly human-impacted environments like South Florida.
In addition to conservation-relevant research, SRC works to inspire scientific literacy and environmental engagement in K-12 youth. Our education and outreach initiatives range from classroom visits and curriculum creation to creating hands-on field research opportunities for students, with the goal of capturing the excitement and wonder of sharks and science for all learners.
