Large-Scale Marine Protected Areas

marine conservation

Large-scale marine protected areas (MPAs) >100,000 km2 make up ~75% of the world’s marine protected area coverage, making them critically important to achieving global conservation targets and associated social benefits.  In partnership with the University of Guelph and the Big Ocean  network of large-scale MPA managers, we are conducting a long-term study of management progress and priorities for large-scale MPAs globally. This work, launched in 2022, will fulfill a need for more robust information about large-scale MPA management that can inform cross-site learning, management decisions, funding priorities, and scholarly research.
