Robert K. Johnson Center For Marine Conservation:


Getting involved:

  • Communications internship: Interns are responsible for running social media accounts, creating flyers and graphics, and developing text and content for the Center’s website.

Internship application information:

  • Internships are paid and typically extend for 2 semesters plus the summer.

Shark Research and Conservation Program:


Getting involved:

  • Undergraduate internships: SRC offers positions to undergraduates ranging from creative internships to shark research internships that are designed to give students hands-on experience in elasmobranch studies
  • MPS Program Interns: SRC offers internships based on ongoing projects and organizational needs to support research and outreach through six-month internship positions. This internship may count towards an MPS internship and project.
  • Fall: RSM 630: Elasmobranch Field Techniques course that gives graduate students hands-on experience

  • Applications typically open in September (undergraduates) and February (MPS students)
  • Applicants are encouraged to visit the SRC website for more information and to submit an application

WAVES:


Getting involved:

  • Annual Event Participation: Volunteer at the annual event in April, where 100-200 K-12 students are hosted for a day of hands-on learning. Sign-up information is sent out via email in the spring semester.
  • Spring Course: Plan the annual event by enrolling in the 3-credit spring course RSM 641: Broadening Participation in Marine Science
  • WAVES Internship: Interns assist in visiting local schools, developing lesson plans, tabling at conservation events, and helping plan a teacher professional development event. This is an unpaid internship unless grant funding is available and there may be an opportunity to use this for an MPS internship and project.

Internship application information:

Submit a single PDF document to mcartolano@miami.edu by the deadline, including:

  • An updated Resume/CV with relevant experience and at least one reference. 
  • A Statement of Interest (max 1 page) outlining your interest, relevant skills, and career goals.

Getting involved:

  • Citizen science : The Rescue a Reef program has volunteer opportunities available for anyone interested in supporting our coral conservation and restoration efforts. Sign up for our email newsletter here: http://bit.ly/email_rescueareef  
  • Undergraduate fellowships : Our Coral Restoration Lab and Rescue a Reef program offer multiple student fellowship positions every year that are designed to provide hands-on training and experience in our coral research, restoration, conservation, and communication activities. SCUBA dive certification required.
  • MPS internships: Our Coral Restoration Lab and Rescue a Reef program offer multiple MPS student internship positions every year that are designed to provide hands-on training and experience in our coral research, restoration, conservation, and communication activities. They are typically six-month internships and fulfill the MPS Program and capstone requirements. AAUS scientific dive authorization required.
