Our Mission

The Robert K. Johnson Center for Marine Conservation is a new hub for interdisciplinary and solutions-oriented marine conservation research, education, and outreach in the Rosenstiel School. Our mission is to foster connections between science and society that inspire and inform transformative marine conservation in Florida and globally. We embrace a multi-faceted definition of marine conservation that emphasizes the links between ocean health, human well-being, and environmental justice.

Our Goals

  • Produce actionable research and knowledge  that addresses pressing marine conservation challenges and the needs of ocean-dependent communities.
  • Catalyze non-traditional partnerships  across disciplines and sectors that can lead to creative thinking and innovative practices in marine conservation.
  • Strengthen capacity  among Rosenstiel School faculty, staff, and students in engaged research and science communication.
  • Develop innovative education and outreach programs  for University of Miami students, K-12 students, and coastal communities.
  • Provide expertise and thought leadership  to inform marine conservation decision-making and policy in South Florida, across the nation, and around the world.
  • Support science communication  that reaches relevant audiences in formats they can access, use, and understand.
  • Broaden participation in marine conservation  by prioritizing engagement with groups that have been historically underrepresented in the field of marine conservation.
