Funding for marine conservation from philanthropic foundations has more than doubled over the past decade. This funding is critical for addressing the biodiversity and climate crises in our oceans. Yet, there is little science-based guidance available about how to leverage philanthropic resources effectively and equitably for ocean conservation. We are changing that.
Launched in 2018, the Ocean Philanthropy Research Initiative partners with marine conservation practitioners and donors to identify and address salient research questions about ocean philanthropy from a social science perspective. Using a “knowledge co-production” approach we are developing evidence-based insights that can inform grant-making practices and help donors, NGOs, and governments realize the positive potential of ocean philanthropy.
