Marine Mammal Conservation Science

The Marine Mammal Conservation Science Lab (MMCS) studies pressing issues related to the conservation and management of aquatic mammals, with a focus on small cetaceans. We aim to advance our understanding of how anthropogenic activities affect aquatic mammals and to provide science-based recommendations to mitigate and decrease negative interactions. Our research is highly interdisciplinary, using knowledge and tools from both the natural and social sciences to address questions through a holistic and applied approach. Concurrent with our research, we develop public outreach initiatives and participatory science opportunities to make our science accessible to diverse audiences.

Current research topics

  • Effects of freshwater exposure on estuarine dolphins
  • Interactions between dolphins and recreational fisheries
  • Demographics of endangered South American river dolphins
  • Use of aquatic mammals as bait in small-scale fisheries
